Justin Ferguson, AIA, PhD, Joins MD+A as Director of Urban Design + Planning

Justin brings a wealth of experience to Meticulous Design + Architecture (MD+A). A graduate of University of Michigan, PhD, and MSc, and University of Cincinnati, BArch, Justin has over two decades of professional experience on a range of project types from local placemaking interventions to housing, malls, airports, neighborhood visioning, and city master planning. His focus for the past 15 years has centered on assisting cities, towns, neighborhoods, and non-profits facilitate and synthesize public engagement in design and planning to impact lives and transform communities with sustainable vibrancy.
Through the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National Endowment for the Arts. Justin served as an expert resource team member for the Mayors’ Institute on City Design at both the national and regional level. He was nationally selected to participate in the AIA Design Justice Summit and named an AIA Blueprint for Better Communities Champion. Justin currently serves as the Regional Center Hearing Examiner for the City of Indianapolis, reviewing proposed high impact projects for downtown. He also serves as Chair of the Indy Chamber’s Monumental Awards committee which celebrates the impact of an array of disciplines on our region such as architecture, engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, and neighborhood revitalization.
Justin is the former Assistant Dean of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University where he re-established and led CAP: INDY. During this time, he also served as director of the Master of Urban Design (MUD) program as well as the Founding Executive Director of the Center for Civic Design (CCD), all in Indianapolis.

As Director of Urban Design + Planning, Justin will lead and further develop MD+A’s urban design and planning studio. This includes establishing global standard operating procedures for the development and execution of urban design and planning projects, managing and overseeing coordination with all associated disciplines for project execution and oversight, and establishing and implementing project team structures based on scope and deliverables requirements.
